Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Happy Cinco de Mayo amigos! Spanish for “the 5th of May”, it was this day in history almost 150 years ago that our neighboring country Mexico defeated French forces who were attempting to invade their homeland. Odds were against the Mexican force, which relied on only 4,000 of their soldiers to stand up against over 8,000 French soldiers. The fact that is was such an unlikely victory over the strong French troops made the Battle of Puebla even more of a triumph for the Mexican army.
Although French occupation continued until 1866, the Mexican soldiers’ courage and determination inspired Mexican Americans. Thus, the United States best recognizes this day as a holiday to celebrate the culture and experiences of Americans of Mexican ancestry. It is observed by many Americans, regardless of ethnic origin, whether it’s indulging in the great tastes of Mexican food and drinks or holding a special event to highlight Mexican culture (most notably music and regional dancing).
