Inhabited Chair: 2010 The Green Games

My name is Zachary Wolfson, I’m a student at Northeastern doing my internship at Shoebuy.com.  I will be writing weekly blog entries, which I modeled after “Monday Morning Quarterback” by Peter King who is a great sports writer and always gives some love to my Philadelphia Eagles.  Every week, there will be a main story where I discuss something that is happening in the world at that time, my shoe thoughts of the week, where I share my thoughts on a couple of styles and my non-shoe thoughts of the week where I just share random thoughts for your enjoyment.

According to the EPA “Scientists are certain that human activities are changing the composition of the atmosphere, and that increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases will change the planets’ climate.”  This human activity refers to things we all do, drive a car, heat our homes, or go to a hockey game.  What the problem with going to a hockey game?  The ice-grooming machines used by the rinks (commonly called Zambonis, although this is just one brand of ice-grooming machines) use fossil fuels to motor their way around the rink.  Luckily, however, a solution has come along so that we may continue watching toothless men whack a little puck around and beat each other up.  This all springs from an interesting article I found in The New York Times about how Resurface Corporation will be supplying electric ice-grooming machines to the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games.  It comes as part of the environmental sustainability movement being supported by Canada and the IOC called Environment Canada.  Everything from the sponsors chosen to the public transportation available will be chosen with “green” in mind.  These actions under an international spotlight combined with President Obama’s promise of “green collar” jobs will move us in the right direction, but we still have a long way to go.

Shoe Thoughts of the Week

In the spirit of my main story, here are a couple of shoes that promote a sustainable environment.

As one of the most reliable brands on earth, Timberland does their part to contribute to the green movement.  Made partially from recycled material, these boots leave a small environment footprint.  This boot wicks away moisture to keep your feet warm and dry and is designed to make sure you are comfortable whether walking or standing.

The Earth brand has long been committed to manufacturing shoes in an environmentally sustainable way, including the materials and the manufacturing process itself.  They are very comfortable and allow you to do a little more to help the environment.

Acorn is another brand that is committed to keeping our planet in good shape.  They use Lite© eco-friendly leather and green manufacturing processes.  The Cami Ballet comes in several earthy tones to complete the shoe as an environmentalist’s dream.

I wanted to finish my shoe thoughts this week with something a little out-there (in a good way).  The IPATH Locust certainly fits the bill.  This eco-friendly shoe has so much funk, it has an afro.  I might get this for myself.

Non-Shoe Thoughts of the Week:

  • First off, congratulations to the Pittsburgh Steelers on winning the Super Bowl, they played a great game and Santonio Holmes really deserved the MVP award after playing his heart out on the game winning drive.
  • The Office Thoughts
    • The special one-hour episode of The Office following the Super Bowl was fantastic.  It had one of the better cold opens of the entire show.  I’m a sucker for the Pam and Jim story line and this episode did not disappoint there.  Nothing from the Dwight and Angela storyline however, but I’m sure they will be addressed later.  Overall I am satisfied with the episode.
    • The regularly scheduled episode this week had another good cold open with Michael discovering the PA system, that’s two good ones in a row.
    • Jim and Dwight are now the joint heads of the party planning committee.  Jim: “Dwight, IT IS YOUR BIRTHDAY. [read from sign] there’s not even an exclamation point.”  Dwight “It’s a fact, it’s not like she found a cure for cancer.”
    • Pam is taking Michael to gain closure with Holly, I feel like this detour is not going to work out well for either of them.
  • LOST Thoughts
    • As we found out during the last episode, time travel messes with your mind.  At least I haven’t gotten a nosebleed.
    • I’m pretty sure Ellie and Eloise Hawkins are the same person at different times.  Ellie is the young blonde girl who took Faraday to the Hydrogen Bomb and Eloise Hawkins is the one who told Ben Linus he had 70 hours to get everybody back to the island.  She also made an appearance in “The Constant” as a jeweler at the jewelry store where Desmond went to get an engagement ring.
    • Jin is back and Danielle Rousseau pulled him out of the water.  At this point, depending on how long Jin has been unconscious he may not know about the flashes, and he certainly does not know what they mean.  It will be interesting to see how he works that out, meeting a younger version of someone he thought was dead.
    • According to Faraday’s theory, Miles must have been on the island longer than he thinks.  I believe this means that he is Dr. Pierre Chang’s son.  Dr. Pierre Chang is the man from the orientation tapes that are in each of the Dharma stations.
    • How does Ben know that Jin is alive?  He told Sun that Jin was alive and that he could prove it, but how does he know?

Thanks for reading, I always enjoy hearing from my readers so leave lots of comments on anything I’ve said.  Please subscribe to the Shoebuyblog.com RSS feed and tell all your friends.
