Inhabited Chair: I’m sailing away

My name is Zachary Wolfson, I’m a student at Northeastern doing my internship at Shoebuy.com.  I will be writing weekly blog entries, which I modeled after “Monday Morning Quarterback” by Peter King who is a great sports writer and always gives some love to my Philadelphia Eagles.  Every week, there will be a main story where I discuss something that is happening in the world at that time, my shoe thoughts of the week, where I share my thoughts on a couple of styles and my non-shoe thoughts of the week where I just share random thoughts for your enjoyment.

“Set an open course for the virgin sea.”  Cruising is, perhaps, my favorite way to vacation.  You get to see several different cities (if not countries), eat everything you can all for one price and only unpack your bags once.  I love going on cruises.  Personally I can get bored of touring old churches and other minor landmarks fairly quickly.  Don’t get me wrong, I find this stuff really interesting. It’s just that when it’s the same thing for several days in a row it can get old.  However, on a cruise when you are never in one place for more than a day, I never get bored because I just have to visit the top landmarks of our current port of call.

Another reason I like cruising is that you get to meet some really cool people.  Unlike a traditional land vacation, everyone on a cruise is there for the same amount of time so the first night or two, everyone is trying to get to know one another.  On any given cruise there are people from all over the world and people love to talk about themselves.  You can really learn a lot, or at the very least be entertained by listening to their stories.  For example, on the second cruise I was on, I learned a lot about how different American and English cultures really are.  In addition, you get to eat all the fantastic food you want and what can I say…I love to eat.

Today’s mega-cruise ships are literally floating cities, holding thousands of passengers and sporting amenities like theater, ice skating, and gambling.  As both the son of a travel agent and as a past cruiser, I can say it is certainly an economical way to see the world, as long as you don’t get drunk.  If you think I’m kidding, it is estimated that a third of a cruise line’s revenue is generated by the sale of liquor.  Even if the cost is not the issue, it is still easier to enjoy the scenery when you can see it straight.  So, go…see the world, it’s a pretty cool place.

Shoe Thoughts:  This week I am going to highlight several shoes that are perfect for vacationing on the sea.

The Birkenstock Arizona is a classic sandal that can be worn by both men and women.  Its versatility makes it the perfect cruising footwear, and they are comfortable enough for exploring your destination fully.

There is no shoe more apropos for cruising than a boat shoe.  The GBX 13146 is a little different take on the traditional boat shoe like those from Sperry Top-Sider or Sebago.  It makes a bolder fashion statement while still providing all the functionality you want from a boat shoe.

If sandals or boat shoes aren’t your thing, you will be comfortable all day in the Brooks Addiction Walkers.  Great for walking around the ship or taking excursions on land, these shoes are suitable for most climates.

Non-Shoe Thoughts:

  • LOST thoughts:
    • Well, I guess they can’t all be amazing.
    • I think Sawyer and Juliet getting together was about the most predictable thing to happen on the show.
    • The only thing of note that happened was that we learned a little bit more about Horace.  He is apparently the leader of the Dharma initiative and the appearance of the Ankh like cross from Amy’s husband raises some similarities to Egyptian mythology.  The Ankh is an Egyptian hieroglyphic character that roughly translates to eternal life.  In addition, there is an Egyptian god named Horus who was the god of the sky and had the head of a falcon.  As the god of Lower Egypt, he had battled Set, the god of Upper Egypt.  After Horus defeats Set, he unites the two Egypts and rises in the god hierarchy.  Later, however he is depicted as a child with his thumb in his mouth sitting on his mother’s lap, suggesting a time loop of sorts.  The Horace we know is in a lengthy battle with Richard Alpert and when he is introduced to us, Horace is stuck in a time loop, perpetually cutting down a tree.
  • The Office thoughts:
    • This was the second Valentines Day episode that they have done, both were very funny.
    • Kevin is so sad, but it is hilarious.
    • Oscar continues to show that he is probably the most normal person in that office.
