Inhabited Chair: Macedonian Presidential Elections
This past Sunday, Macedonia held the first round of its presidential elections. Macedonia is a small country roughly the size of Vermont that is located just above Greece. Macedonia has a run-off style election as opposed to our primary-based system. The top two candidates from Sunday’s election, Gjorgje Ivanov and Ljubomir Frckoski, will compete head to head on April 5. The election passed without violence and is an important step towards them joining NATO and the EU. I know the first round of election in a country of just over 2 million people may not seem significant, but I thought it was important to write about. Not only does it remind me how unique our situation is, where we have a guaranteed peaceful change of power every 4 to 8 years, but it was also the only piece of good news I could find. I know that the news often takes a somber and dramatic approach in an attempt to entertain, but with the economy the way it is, I need to read something with an optimistic tone every now and then. The story reminds us that, despite all the bad things, there is still progress being made towards freedom and democracy.

- LOST thoughts:
- Juliet laid claim to her man now that Kate is back.
- Hurley has absolutely no subtlety about him, he just calls it like he sees it.
- My guess is that Ben was behind the flaming van.
- Ben cannot be dead. According to the rules of time travel that LOST established through Faraday, everything that will happen, has already happened. This means that, because we know that Ben grows up, he’s not dead. This means that Ben would have recognized the survivors of 815 when they first crashed on the island. He had shown no signs of this before but I may have just missed them. Perhaps being shot caused enough trauma or even physical damage to his brain to cause him to forget the 815 survivors. That one really threw me for a loop.
- The Office Thoughts:
- For now it looks like Michael is gone, he took Pam with him. It is fairly doubtful that he will actually be successful in starting his own paper company, but you never know.
- Stanley is the new productivity czar and Kevin will be answering the phones. Stanley has never been productive and Kevin is really awkward in general let alone over the phone so those were some interesting staffing choices made by the new guy.
- With only four more new episodes this season I have no idea where the show is going but I’m sure the journey there will be entertaining.
