Inhabited Chair: The Swine Flu of Politics
Earlier this week, Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter switched political parties. It is not an unprecedented move for an elected official to switch parties, although it is unusual, especially at this high level of the government. Much like the swine flu, people are making far too big a deal out of this. Specter has always been considered liberal for Republicans, so it’s not the same as if a staunch conservative like Tom Cober, ranked 3rd on humanevents.com’s list of 10 most conservative senators, became a tree hugging liberal. Note: I do not think that Democrats are tree hugging liberals. Even under the Republican label, he still sided with President Obama on economic reform and had seemed to be a Republican in name only. People make such a big deal about the Democrats being one senator closer to the magic number of 60 to be filibuster proof. People seem to forget that even though a political party is the leading predictor of how someone will vote, there are many other issues at play. Democrats are unlikely to reach 100% agreement on anything, especially on issues so controversial that the Republicans would consider using a filibuster. Changing political parties is not going to affect Specter’s voting; it was a move he made so that he was more appropriately labeled, as he no longer felt his views aligned with that of the majority in the Republican Party. In addition, the switch is suspiciously politically convenient for him, as he is facing a tough primary challenger, but can now counter with President Obama’s support. Whatever the reason for the switch, the new label is as inconsequential as to whether or not we call Pluto a “planet.” No matter what you call it, Pluto is still the same thing it always has been, it will just throw off some beloved pneumonic devices.
Shoe Thoughts: In the spirit of Senator Specter’s centrist politics that caused him to feel apart from the now ultra-conservative Republican Party, I am going to feature unisex shoes, which are the definition of centrist in the shoe world.
The Quark Freedom is constantly mentioned as one of the most comfortable shoes on our website. Thought it’s not exactly a fashion statement, its versatile design will look acceptable on either a man’s or a women’s foot.
Coming in so many colors that everyone can find something they like, whether male or female, the Crocs Caymen started a comfort sensation around the nation. With all the Crocs shoes, comfort is the name of the game and it all started with this shoe.
Dr. Martens is known for their quality boots and these are no different. These slip-on boots are very versatile and will make any wearer happy.
Non-Shoe Thoughts
- LOST Thoughts:
- Although most of us suspected it, we now have confirmation that Widmore is Faraday’s father. For now it seems to just be a link between Faraday and Charles and nothing more.
- Now that Faraday is dead, his mother has no idea what is coming next, she only knew up to that point but now Daniel’s loop is closed so she is in the dark.
- Jack will continue to try and change the past. It won’t work, not without Desmond’s help and not in the way Jack thinks it will.
- Last night I went to the midnight showing of X-Men Origins: Wolverine so I was resting for that and did not watch The Office this week.
- X-Men was a good movie, I really liked but it will be much better as a part of a series as it is intended to be.
- I had to move from one dorm to another this week, moving is a pain, but my new dorm has air conditioning so come summer time, it will all be worth it.
- I thought the Eagles had a great draft, especially if you consider their trading part of the draft. Jason Peters will really help the offensive line and Ellis Hobbs is great Sheldon Brown insurance for two fifth round draft picks.
And now I would like to say a few words about myself and my posts. My name is Zachary Wolfson, I’m a student at Northeastern doing my internship at Shoebuy.com. I will be writing weekly blog entries, which I modeled after “Monday Morning Quarterback” by Peter King who is a great sports writer and always gives some love to my Philadelphia Eagles. Every week, there will be a main story where I discuss something that is happening in the world at that time, my shoe thoughts of the week, where I share my thoughts on a couple of styles and my non-shoe thoughts of the week where I just share random thoughts for your enjoyment.
Thanks for reading. I always enjoy hearing from my readers so leave lots of comments on anything I’ve said. Please subscribe to the Shoebuyblog.com RSS feed and tell all your friends.
