Shoebuy Trivia Night

Where was the Pug dog breed first created? Don’t know the answer? Then you should have been with the Shoebuy Technology and Operations Departments for their quarterly outing this past Tuesday. Every quarter both departments get together to enjoy some time away from the office relaxing, having fun, and getting to know each other better.

This past Tuesday we went to a local pub, Elephant and Castle, for some drinks, appetizers, and to participate in their weekly trivia night. This night happened to be the finals in their two month long tournament so while we did compete we were unfortunately not eligible for the tournament grand prize of four Boston Bruins tickets. But now we have something to shoot for next year! Due to size limits our group had to break into two teams, the “Shoe Strings” and the “Red Shirts”. The “Shoe Strings” get the prize for the more creative name while the “Red Shirts” were more literal as our team captain happened to be wearing a red shirt that night. He is the king of trivia around the office, so we figured naming our team after him couldn’t hurt. The trivia consisted of four rounds with a total of 20 questions, while there were no shoe questions there were subjects ranging from dogs to literature and entertainment to science.

After a few hours of answering questions, getting some right and getting some wrong but always having a good time, the “Red Shirts” managed to pull slightly ahead of the “Shoe Strings” and thanks to a big score on the last question, in the end we won First Place for the non-tournament teams. Though we didn’t win the four Bruins tickets, we did win a $50 gift certificate to the pub, which we will no doubt put to good use. The winning team was made up of people from both the Technology and Operations Departments, which really helped to underscore what the night was all about.

Want to know the final question that put us over the top, here goes. What scale was created in 1935 with the assistance of Beno Gutenberg at the California Institute of Technology. The answer, the Richter Scale. Oh, and for all of you out there wondering where the Pug was first created, luckily we got that one right too, China.
