Shoebuy Volunteers for a Great Cause

Jennifer Carp, an employee here at Shoebuy, reflects on Shoebuy’s participation in the Two Ten Footwear Foundation’s recent Community Service Day.On October 2nd, a group from Shoebuy had the opportunity to participate in an event sponsored by the Two Ten Footwear Foundation. For those who don’t know, Two Ten is a great organization that involves the footwear industry in strengthening local communities with financial, social and educational support.

Our event was a summer camp close down. You know, end of the season, time to put away the shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops and pull out the sweaters, jeans and boots. With an ominous weather forecast of rain and misery, we were pleasantly surprised with sun and warmth.

Our mission of the day - “yard work” - and I use that term loosely, to prevent overgrowth in the fall and spring and basic maintenance. The yard work I am accustomed to involves throwing pinecones in a bin. This was not your basic yard work.

My group got to clear out the brush and overgrowth, and let’s not forget - poison ivy - from a stream that runs through the camp. Armed with rakes, shovels, clippers oh my, we got started. It wasn’t a huge space when you are talking about the outdoors, but around 2500-3000 square feet. We took out every branch, limb, and vine that was visible. Some shrubs were spared, such as the beautiful rhododendron.

We broke for a well earned lunch. We had burgers, chips, salad, pears, whoopee pies and lots of other summer camp goodies. There was a raffle for the volunteers. Nobody from Shoebuy won, but we did donate a $250 gift certificate. The director of the camp spoke, and thanked everyone for their efforts and time. We watched a video of the camp, campers and all. Would any of us do it again? Definitely. Maybe not the poison ivy part, but everything else.
